The locking buckle keeps the strap from slipping loose, which was my biggest frustration with other ties. It cinches down tight and holds even after a full day of hiking.

Rolled my pad tight for a three-day trip and these nylon straps kept it that way the whole time, no loosening in my pack. The buckles hold tension way better than the flimsy cord I used before.

The locking buckles actually stay put, unlike the flimsy velcro ones I used before. I strapped my pad to the outside of my pack on a wet hike and it never shifted once.
