Compare the WindBurner Personal and PocketRocket stove kits to find the right balance of wind resistance, weight, and cooking power for your trips.
Quick Answer
If you camp in windy spots and want a stable, integrated cooking system, choose the WindBurner Personal. If you prioritize minimal weight and pack size for solo trips, the PocketRocket 2 Mini Stove Kit is the smarter pick.
Wind resistance vs. pack weight
The biggest difference between these stove kits is how they handle wind. The WindBurner Personal's windproof design keeps the flame stable even in breezy conditions, which means faster boils and less fuel wasted. The PocketRocket stoves are compact and lightweight, but they don't offer the same wind protection, so you may need a windscreen or a sheltered spot.
Weight matters if you're counting every ounce. The PocketRocket 2 Mini Stove Kit is designed for solo backpackers who want an ultra-compact cook-and-eat kit. The WindBurner Personal is also solo-focused, but its integrated system adds bulk and weight in exchange for wind performance and a more stable setup.
Cooking style and meal needs
Consider how you cook. The WindBurner Personal is a modular system that integrates the stove and cookware, making it easy to pack and use. It's ideal for fast-boil meals like dehydrated backpacking dinners. The PocketRocket Deluxe Stove Kit adds a regulator for better simmer control, which is useful if you want to cook more than just boil-in-bag meals.
If you mostly boil water and want simplicity, the WindBurner Personal covers that well. If you like to vary your meals and need precise flame control, the PocketRocket Deluxe is worth a look, even though it's not as windproof.
The tradeoffs at a glance
- Windproof design: The WindBurner Personal's windproof design maintains performance in breezy conditions; the PocketRocket stoves are not windproof and need shelter or a windscreen.
- Weight and pack size: The PocketRocket 2 Mini Stove Kit is ultra-compact and pairs a micro stove with essential cookware; the WindBurner Personal's modular system is bulkier but integrates stove and cookware for efficient packing. If every ounce counts, the PocketRocket 2 Mini saves space; if wind stability matters more, accept the extra weight.
- Cooking control: The PocketRocket Deluxe Stove Kit offers a premium lightweight option for 1-2 backpackers, with better simmer control than the basic PocketRocket 2; the WindBurner Personal focuses on fast-boil efficiency rather than precise cooking. Choose the Deluxe if you want to cook real meals; choose the WindBurner or PocketRocket 2 for quick boils.
