Learn how to store water long-term using the PlatyPreserve. Step-by-step guide for emergency water storage and camping trips.

Quick answer

Store water long-term in the PlatyPreserve by cleaning it thoroughly, filling with treated water, removing air, and keeping it in a cool, dark place.

Why the PlatyPreserve works for long-term storage

The PlatyPreserve is a collapsible 800mL bottle made from flexible materials that resist cracking and save space when empty. Its lightweight design makes it ideal for emergency kits or camping trips where every ounce counts.

Because it is not a rigid container, you must take care to remove all air before sealing to prevent bacterial growth. The trade-off is that you sacrifice the durability of a hard plastic jug for portability and packability.

How to store water long-term in the PlatyPreserve

  1. Clean the bottle thoroughly: Wash the PlatyPreserve with hot soapy water and rinse completely. Dry the inside with a clean cloth or air-dry upside down. Any residue can introduce bacteria that spoil the water. Do not skip drying—moisture promotes mold even before you add water.
  2. Treat the water before filling: Use tap water that has been boiled and cooled, or add 2 drops of unscented bleach per liter (8 drops for the 800mL bottle) and let it sit for 30 minutes. This kills microorganisms that cause off-flavors or illness. Do not use untreated well or stream water—it can contain pathogens that multiply over time.
  3. Fill and remove all air: Fill the bottle to the brim, then squeeze out any remaining air before sealing. Air pockets encourage algae and bacteria growth. The flexible design makes this easy—just roll the bottle from the bottom up. A common mistake is leaving too much headspace; the less air, the longer the water stays fresh.
  4. Store in a cool, dark place: Keep the sealed PlatyPreserve in a cupboard, basement, or other area away from direct sunlight and temperature swings. Heat and light degrade the bottle material and accelerate microbial growth. Avoid storing near water heaters or windows—check the temperature stays below 70°F (21°C).
  5. Rotate the water every 6 months: Mark the date on the bottle with a permanent marker. Every six months, empty the water, wash the bottle, and refill with fresh treated water. This ensures the water remains safe and tastes good. If you skip rotation, the water may still be safe but can develop a stale taste.
