Quick answer
Regular field maintenance of your MSR MiniWorks EX Purifier ensures safe drinking water and extends the life of the filter. Follow these steps after each trip or when flow slows.
Why field maintenance matters
Your MiniWorks EX Purifier is a versatile system that can handle a wide range of water sources. But sediment, debris, and biological buildup will eventually slow flow and reduce effectiveness. Cleaning in the field prevents clogs and keeps your water safe without needing a full overhaul.
The ceramic filter element is durable but can crack if dropped on rocks. Always handle it over soft ground or a cloth.
Field maintenance steps
- Backflush the filter: After each use, pump clean water backward through the system. Attach the included backflush adapter to a water bottle, pump until the water runs clear. This dislodges trapped particles from the ceramic element. Common mistake: using dirty water for backflushing—always use clean water to avoid re-clogging.
- Scrub the ceramic element: If flow remains slow, remove the ceramic element and gently scrub the outer surface with the included scrub pad or a soft brush under clean water. This removes surface buildup without damaging the ceramic. Checkpoint: if you see cracks or chips, replace the element immediately—a damaged ceramic filter can let pathogens through.
- Dry and store properly: After cleaning, shake out excess water and let all parts air dry completely before storage. Store the filter in a dry, breathable bag away from direct sunlight. This prevents mold growth and rubber seal degradation. Common mistake: storing the filter wet or in a sealed plastic bag—moisture promotes bacterial growth and seal damage.
About your purifier
- MiniWorks® EX Purifier System: The MiniWorks EX Purifier is designed for a wide range of water sources and built with trusted MSR quality. This means you can rely on it for lakes, rivers, and streams, but you still need to maintain the ceramic element to keep flow rates high.
