Compare the MSR Guardian Purifier and Guardian Gravity Purifier to decide which award-winning water filter fits your backpacking style.
Quick Answer
Choose the Guardian Purifier for fast, on-demand pumping in any water source, or the Guardian Gravity Purifier for hands-off filtration at camp when you have time to let gravity work.
Pump vs Gravity: How They Work
The Guardian Purifier uses a hand pump to force water through its filter, giving you immediate control over flow rate. You can drink directly from a stream or fill bottles on the move. The Guardian Gravity Purifier relies on gravity: you hang a dirty-water bag, and water drips through the same filter cartridge into a clean container below. No pumping means less effort, but it takes longer to process a full batch.
Weight and Packability
The pump system is heavier and bulkier because it includes the pump mechanism and hoses. The gravity system saves weight by replacing the pump with a simple bag-and-hose setup. If every ounce matters for a long trek, the gravity version is the lighter carry. But if you need water fast at multiple stops, the pump's weight may be worth it.
Trade-Offs at a Glance
- Setup Speed: Pump: ready in seconds, start filtering immediately. Gravity: requires hanging the bag and waiting for water to pass through, which takes several minutes per liter.
- Effort Required: Pump: you must manually pump each liter, which can be tiring over a full day. Gravity: no pumping, just hang and wait, saving arm fatigue.
- Best Use Scenario: Pump: ideal for solo hikers who stop at multiple streams and want water fast. Gravity: better for base camps or groups where you can set up and let it run while you do other tasks. If you frequently filter water on the move, lean toward the pump. If you mostly filter at camp, the gravity system is more convenient.
