Compare Evo Tails flotation add-ons with Revo Trail snowshoes. Learn when a 6-inch tail extension beats a dedicated snowshoe and how to choose for deep snow.
Quick answer
Choose the MSR Revo Trail Snowshoes if you want one dependable snowshoe for rolling winter hikes. Add Evo Tails only if you already own Evo snowshoes and need extra flotation in deep, soft snow.
Traction vs. flotation: two different jobs
Traction and flotation solve separate problems. Traction keeps your foot from slipping on hardpack, crust, or sidehills. Flotation keeps you from sinking in powder. The Revo Trail is a complete snowshoe built for rolling terrain, while Evo Tails are modular extensions that add length to an existing Evo snowshoe.
That difference matters when you compare them. The Revo Trail gives you a full frame, binding, and traction in one purchase. Evo Tails give you 6 inches (15 cm) of extra length for deep, soft snow, but they require Evo snowshoes to attach to. They are not a standalone snowshoe.
When a 6-inch tail extension makes sense
Evo Tails are a smart add-on if you already own Evo snowshoes and mostly hike packed trails but occasionally hit deeper snow. The modular design lets you adapt your setup for varying snow conditions without buying a second pair of snowshoes.
The trade-off is that tails add length, which can feel less nimble in tight woods or on steep, technical terrain. They also add only 6 inches, so they improve flotation but do not turn a trail snowshoe into a dedicated powder snowshoe.
When a dedicated snowshoe is the better buy
If you do not already own Evo snowshoes, Evo Tails alone will not get you on the snow. The Revo Trail is the simpler choice because it is a complete, lightweight snowshoe for rolling terrain. It comes in 22-inch and 25-inch sizes to fit a range of users.
The Revo Trail is designed for efficient travel across moderate, rolling landscapes. If your winter hiking is mostly on established trails with occasional soft patches, a dedicated snowshoe like the Revo Trail is more straightforward than buying tails for a snowshoe you do not own.
Decision rules: Evo Tails vs. Revo Trail
- You already own Evo snowshoes and want more flotation: Buy Evo Tails if your Evo snowshoes handle most conditions but you sink in deep, soft snow. They add 6 inches (15 cm) of length for better flotation. Check that your Evo model accepts tails before ordering.
- You need a complete snowshoe for rolling terrain: Choose the Revo Trail if you do not own Evo snowshoes or want a dedicated pair for winter hiking on moderate, rolling landscapes. Pick the 22-inch or 25-inch size based on your weight and typical snow.
- You hike mostly packed trails with occasional powder: Stick with the Revo Trail alone. Tails are most useful when deep snow is a regular part of your route, not an occasional patch.
- You want one setup for tight woods and steep sidehills: Prioritize the Revo Trail without tails. Added length can reduce maneuverability in technical terrain.
